Who: Magenta Porter, 20, Aries. What: Freelance writer, photographer, blogger, creator. When: Right here, right now (as Fatboy Slim puts it.) Where: Currently Perth, Australia. Originally Sydney, Australia. Why: Why not? How: Only time will tell.
Let's get talking.
Writers, social media influencers, YouTubers, fashion bloggers, journalists, artists, creatives and fashion designers all have to start somewhere. This ever expanding industry is populated by hundreds of thousands of people, like myself, just trying to do what they love. In 2017, traditional career paths for the graduates of the future are no longer existent. Years of studying law, medicine, teaching, or commerce are being completely overridden, with the belief that we should follow our dreams, not the dreams of our parents or of the government.
The career paths of great photographers, artists, editors and writers were definitely not easy. Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Madonna, Claude Monet, Gustav Klimt, Coco Chanel, Barack Obama, Beyonce, J.D. Salinger, Anna Wintour, Aung San Suu Kyi. These are just some of the greats, a handful of amazing humans who have inspired me to go forth and conquer. To fully commit to creating a website, a brand, that provides a platform for myself and other likeminded people to exhibit, to express, to discuss and to talk about current issues, their passions and popular culture.
In choosing a name for my website, after many half-hearted attempts at previous blogs, I thought stuff it - what words could possibly describe myself and everything I'm about more than my name. And it's a weird name at that. But hopefully it makes this website slightly more memorable. I have struggled for years with coming to terms with what I actually wanted to do with my adult life, and one year into it, I've decided to take a leap and do it. I know I'm young, I know I've got another 60 odd years to get my life sorted, to do what I want. But why wait. Why wait until I've finished my university degree. Why wait until I've moved to a big city. Despite how cliche it sounds, there is literally no point in putting the things that you love off - start doing what you want to do right now, right this very instant. If you hate your job, quit. If you can't stand what you are studying, change course. If you want to start a blog, START IT. I got a lot of mixed feedback when I started writing a blog in my final year of high school - it came with praise, and it came with hate. I don't care anymore if you dub me the "Wannabe, pretentious 18 year old university student." From the moment I watched the Devil Wears Prada for the first time when I was just eight years old, I knew exactly where I wanted to be in life, and I am not going to put off doing what I want, what I love, one bit longer, to avoid the self-doubt, the hate and the judgement.
So I will say it once, if you don't want to see my photos, my posts, my updates - unfriend me and unfollow me on social media right now. If not, suck it up, you're choosing to see what I do dear friend and that is your choice. For those of you who support me and for those I love - you know who you are, thank you for everything.
