Don't Freak OUt - Summer Is Around the Corner (YAY), And I Have All Of Your Beauty Prep Sorted For You.
Although it may not technically be summer just yet, the air is getting hotter, the days are getting longer, school (uni) is almost out for the year, and my local shopping centre has put the Chrissy decorations up. If that doesn't scream summer, then I don't know what does. Summer is definitely the nations favourite time of the year, with days spent at the beach, family holidays to the coast, pool parties and barbecues being a weekly occurrence for the next three months. Summer, for us beauty lovers, means less makeup, natural hair and easy dressing. But that is easier said than done. The 'natural makeup look' has definitely been this years hottest trend, even through winter, which of course I love because it means less fuss, right? WRONG. No sir, it actually takes a lot to get yourself looking 'natural' - which sounds absolutely ridiculous, I know. But I like to think of it as self care - the more you care for yourself, inside and out, the more luminous, effortless and natural you will appear. So before you go into freak out mode, realising that our extensively long uni student summer starts this Friday night officially, I've got you covered with five simple steps that'll have you ready for whatever the upcoming months throw at you in no time, from the beach to the bar. And before you get too bored, this post is all about your body for once, a face/skincare/makeup post is in the making, but for now I thought I'd focus on bigger things.
1. did Somone Say Tan?
I wasn't always a fan of fake tan - throughout my high school years I had witnessed far too many of my friends go from snow white to oompa loompa in a matter of 24 hours. I wore my peach/translucent/pale skin with pride, even boasting about how streak and orange free it was. But I've since developed a true appreciation for the change a tan can make to not only your appearance, but your confidence. If done right, a fake tan can make you appear healthier, younger and lets face it, more fun - because even if you don't get out, it gives the illusion that you do. I've grown even more fond of the product due to its' anti-real-tan nature, as it means less sun baking, less sun burn, and less skin cancer. However, I can't stand sitting around for hours on end avoiding touching anything, all for the sake of looking a bit brown. Been there, done that, have the sheet stains to prove it. So last week, I purchased some gradual tan, in the hope that it might give me a bit of a glow. And I cannot recommend it enough. The Bondi Sands Everyday Gradual Tanning Milk gave me the darkest, natural, streak free tan I have ever had, and all it took was five minutes to apply after my shower, three days in a row. No drying time needed, and no coconut smell, instead a nice chocolatey aroma. It also didn't dry my skin out, as it works like a moisturiser. Five days since applying my last coat, I am still as tanned as ever, and haven't got any scaly bits! Just make sure that you rub it in like a moisturiser everywhere, because it goes on white - so it is hard to tell where you've left too much residue. Start applying on a Tuesday night to be perfectly, fuss-free tanned by the weekend.
2. Exfoliation Station
Of course, with regular tanning comes regular tan-removing. For this, instead of using a gel exfoliator or product of the like, I would highly recommend my coffee scrub recipe. I don't follow any strict measurements, but basically I just pop some coffee grounds, fractionated coconut oil and raw sugar in a bowl, and combine until it reaches a scrub texture - it's a bit of a trial and error method I know, but if you've got excess, just store it in the fridge for next time. Where do I get my coffee grounds from you may ask? The local coffee shop of course, they throw away tens of kilos of the stuff each day, so next time you go in just ask if they could spare around a 12oz cupful or so, I'm sure they would be happy to do it. By using this scrub, your skin is left not only exfoliated, but deeply moisturised from the coconut oil. It works best if applied, massaged and then left for a couple of minutes to allow the skin to soak up the nutrients from the coffee grounds, which aids in regenerating skin cells and can even minimise the appearance of cellulite. If you're too lazy to make your own, head over to the Frank Body website, which is chockablock with coffee related beauty products.
3. Take Care of Your Hair
Summer is the season of actual beach wave hair at all times. No need for excessive sea salt spray or heat styling, because your hair probably gets enough salt in the waves. However, this often leads to your hair becoming excessively dry, or on humid nights, excessively frizzy. Take care of your hair by applying either rose hip, coconut, moroccan or any other oil to the ends whilst wet at least once a weak, in order to keep your hair strong and prevent breakage.
4. Protect Ya Neck
Most of you will probably be applying SPF to your face in your daily skin routine, and hopefully all of you apply it whilst in the sun and at the beach. But we often forget to protect our décolletage - that is our chest or neck area, and even our ears. Make sure to apply SPF to this area every day, even if you won't be travelling outside, because even sitting in a car can do you damage. This is one of the areas that ages the fastest, so treat it like you treat your face and you're good to go.
5. Don't Forget Your Nails
Having a set of freshly painted finger nails and even toe nails can make a dramatic difference to your look - even if you've got no makeup on, and you're just in your comfy clothes, at least your nails will speak "Hey, I made some effort." Nails pop in photos, but the key is to keep them looking fresh. If you're looking at your chipped, grown out manicure as we speak, get on top of that! It's the one beauty thing that you can do and then not worry about for a week or two, that'll take any outfit to the next level.
Each of these five steps are quick and easy and will have you looking summer ready in no time. Keep your eyes peeled for an in-depth, summer skin care and makeup routine in the upcoming weeks, along with the rest of my upcoming summer content! I can't wait to load the blog up with plenty of lazy summer day reading and viewing for you all.
