Trained Chef-turned-entrepreneur Glen Hagger talks locally sourced produce, growing up in WA and how bread isn’t the enemy.
Glen is a man of many talents - with a passion for food, healthy living and sustainability, the owner and creator behind GH Produce breaks the negative stigma about health, wellbeing and the paleo diet in 2017
After years of living with gut issues, Hagger decided to ditch the shelves and make his own recipes for pantry staples, in a successful attempt to eat only the ingredients he wanted, without the common fillers, preservatives and chemicals found in the previously lacking supermarket alternatives. He adopted a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, similar to that of ancient Indigenous methods, which sparked the real inspiration for his product line of locally sourced, paleo treats - from his famous granola, to vegan cupcake mix and saltbush nuts.
Born in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and growing up in the South West, this homegrown true-blue Aussie surfer is peeling back the layers on previously overly processed foods, whilst still producing flavour packed, fresh meals. Living by and applying the four-pillar motto of local, seasonal, diverse and whole foods, you’re guaranteed to get exactly what you asked for from each one of Hagger’s products. His no-nonsense line is exactly that, in a bid to steer clear of the negative backlash and stigma regarding the paleo diet, Hagger just wants everyone to get back to their roots, stating “I’m not here to preach.. I'm just trying to get people to eat real food again.”
By expanding his love for gardening and fishing from his backyard all the way to the beach and the bush, Hagger supports using locally sourced WA foods as much as possible, for both freshness and sustainability. He’s even been daring enough to delve into the bush tucker field, despite it getting a bad wrap in the 80s.
“They are harsh foods, but they can make a dish unique if you use them in the correct way… I can find food anywhere… sea spinach, sand flower, sea mustard. But it’s still hard to make the break back to tradition.”
Despite his love for his lifestyle, Hagger isn’t an anti-bread protester like many other paleo inspired chefs are. “I’m not anti bread - the world needs commercial bread, it’s best bang for your buck.” Instead, he chooses to encourage others to make healthier choices, by swapping in the cleanest and freshest produce possible.
“Generally, if I stick to my four pillars I’ll always produce a good product…it’s simply a learn as you go process, I’m not getting too stuck to a niche market, I just want people to eat their best… you can’t put a price on health.”
